The Cisco Certified Support Technician (CCST) IT Support is Cisco's direct answer to CompTIA A+ — one $125 exam instead of two ~$274 vouchers, covering real help-desk work: tickets and SLAs, hardware, Windows/macOS/mobile troubleshooting, connectivity, security threats, and remote-support tools. The catch is recognition: A+ has decades of HR mindshare; this is the newcomer.

Why get CCST IT Support

The math and the material. One exam at $125 versus A+'s two exams at ~$274 each is a real difference when you're funding your own start. When your school offers it: free-to-you plus ACE credit is an easy yes. When you're job hunting within six months in a market that lists A+ by name: save toward A+ instead, or do the Google IT Support Certificate first and use its 30% A+ discount. Note this cert bridges sideways (to CCST Networking or Cybersecurity), not upward — unlike CCST Networking, there's no natural Cisco follow-on above it.

    The 100-140 blueprint is the newest and least-covered CCST — third-party prep is thin, so the official topic list matters more here than usual. Six domains, no published weights. Note the soft-skills content: communication is genuinely tested.

    This cert plus a demonstrable story beats the cert alone: wipe and rebuild an old PC, set up remote-desktop access, document three 'tickets' you solved at home in write-up form. That's your interview material — the exam's troubleshooting scenarios get easier too.

    Demo the interface, then book

    Certiport's free Test Drive first, then book via Certiport (schools) or Pearson VUE (individuals — test center or online from home). Remember it's English-only, unlike the other two CCSTs.

    Help desk is the one genuinely entry-level IT tier. CCST + homelab story + any customer-service history is an application-ready package. Apply while momentum is high; add A+ later if your market demands it.

What makes it different from A+ in content?

It's leaner (one 50-minute exam vs two 90-minute ones) and more current in spots — ticketing/SLA/KPI workflows, remote-support tooling, and AI-assisted troubleshooting are first-class topics, which A+ covers lightly or not at all. A+ goes deeper on hardware minutiae and has broader OS coverage. For the actual day-one job, the content gap is smaller than the recognition gap.

What comes after it?

Sideways, then up: CCST IT Support has no direct Cisco cert above it. The natural moves are CCST Networking → CCNA (infrastructure lane) or CCST Cybersecurity → Security+ (security lane), decided by which tickets you enjoy most after a few months in the seat.

Does it expire?

Earned before July 15, 2025: lifetime. On or after: 5 years, exam-only renewal (any current CCST or higher Cisco exam). CE credits don't apply at this tier.
