Most career tools ask what you have done and then fail to understand the answer. A hiring filter does not know what a 25B is. This starts from the work itself — what you actually operated, diagnosed, secured and rebuilt — and maps it onto the capabilities civilian roles are built from.

Pick your occupation to pre-fill the list, then correct it. Two people with the same code did different jobs, and what you actually did outranks what any table thinks your code means.

2. Correct it — this is the part that matters

Tick what you genuinely did, whatever your code says, and untick what you did not. Nothing here asks what unit you were in, where you were, or what you worked on — only what you can do.

These are roles built from the capabilities you ticked. This is not a statement that you are qualified for them or that anyone owes you an interview — it is where your existing work already overlaps, and where the shortest route probably runs.

Three things worth knowing before you apply anywhere

You may already hold the certification

DoD 8140 (formerly 8570) requires a baseline certification for most cyber roles, so a great many people separate already holding Security+, CCNA or similar without thinking of it as a civilian credential. It is the same certification an employer is asking for. Check whether yours is still in date before paying to sit anything.

A clearance is worth money

An active clearance is one of the few things a civilian cannot simply go and acquire, and defence contractors pay for it. It does not stay active forever after you separate, and reinstatement rules are strict and time-bound — so if you have one, treat the window as short and check the current rules rather than assuming.

The filter cannot read your code

Most applications are screened for civilian keywords before a person sees them. "25B" and "S6 shop" match nothing. The capability names on this page are deliberately the words the industry uses — they are worth borrowing when you rewrite your CV.

Where this list comes from, and its limits

25 occupations across 6 services, chosen for genuine technical overlap rather than completeness — this is not a full order of battle, and plenty of technical occupations are missing. Reviewed August 2026.

Occupation codes get reorganised — the Air Force consolidated its cyberspace support codes in 2021, and the Army has restructured the 25-series more than once. Retired codes are kept here and labelled, because a DD-214 carries the code from the year it was issued. If a code is missing or has been renamed, use the capability list directly: it produces exactly the same quality of answer, because that list is what the matching actually runs on.
