Cisco CCST Cybersecurity (100-160) Study Guide
The Cisco Certified Support Technician (CCST) Cybersecurity is Cisco's $125 entry security cert — 50 minutes, no prerequisites, and backed by the most substantial free entry-level cyber curriculum from any vendor (NetAcad's 120-hour Junior Cybersecurity Analyst path). Honest framing: it's a learning checkpoint, not a job ticket.

Audience
Students and absolute beginners pivoting toward security with zero background. If you're mid-career and need a security job soon, this isn't your cert — Security+ is. This is the ground-floor option for people building from nothing on a budget.
Why get CCST Cybersecurity
The strongest reason isn't the cert — it's the curriculum behind it. NetAcad's Junior Cybersecurity Analyst path is 120 free hours of genuinely solid security fundamentals: security principles, network security, endpoint concepts, vulnerability assessment, incident handling. The $125 exam is a confidence checkpoint that proves the material stuck. What it is not: a SOC-job credential. 'Entry-level cybersecurity job' barely exists, and the postings that do exist screen for Security+ (DoD 8140-approved — CCST is not), a degree, or experience. Take this cert with clear eyes: it's the cheapest structured start in security, and the road continues through networking fundamentals and Security+ before a SOC seat is realistic.
Salary expectations
Typical salary range
$40,000 – $58,000 (cyber-adjacent support roles)
The honest version: CCST Cybersecurity alone does not get you a SOC analyst job. It feeds cyber-adjacent support roles — help desk with security duties, junior technician — around $40–58K U.S. Real entry SOC roles ($45–70K) typically want Security+, CCNA Cybersecurity, a degree, or internship experience on top. This cert is mile one of that road, priced accordingly.
When to get CCST Cybersecurity
When you're a student, when your school pays for it, or when you're at the very start of a self-funded pivot and want a milestone partway through the free NetAcad path. Skip it if you need a security job within a year — put the money toward Security+ instead (roughly 3× the cost, but it's the credential HR filters and government contracts actually require). And if you're drawn to security through networking, consider CCST Networking → CCNA → security instead; defenders who understand networks outperform defenders who memorized threat lists.

Step-by-step study path
This sequence reflects what consistently works. Follow it in order—don't skip ahead.
- 1
Start the free Junior Cybersecurity Analyst path
NetAcad's 120-hour path is the official prep and the most substantial free entry cyber curriculum anywhere. It IS the product — the exam just certifies you finished it with understanding. Budget 2–4 months at a steady pace.
- 2
Pull the official blueprint
Download the 100-160 exam topics from the Cisco Learning Network. Five domains, no published weights (Cisco doesn't publish them for CCST — ignore invented percentages). Use it to track coverage as you work through the path.
- 3
Add the Endpoint Security mini-course
NetAcad's free 27-hour Endpoint Security course maps directly onto domain 3 and adds hands-on depth the main path treats more lightly. Free reinforcement — take it.
- 4
Get free hands-on reps outside the courseware
TryHackMe's free intro rooms turn the concepts into practice — and give you something concrete to mention when the cert alone doesn't impress. A beginner who can say 'here's my TryHackMe profile' beats one with only a badge.
- 5
Demo the exam interface, then book
Certiport's free Test Drive shows the real interface. Then book via Certiport (through schools) or Pearson VUE (test center or online). 50 minutes, instant result, unlimited retakes — deliberately low stakes.
- 6
Plan the road past this cert honestly
CCST Cybersecurity is mile one. The realistic sequence to a SOC seat runs through networking fundamentals (CCST Networking or Network+), then Security+ — the DoD-approved HR-filter cert — then hands-on labs and often an IT support rung. Our SOC Analyst path lays out the whole road.

Frequently asked questions
Will CCST Cybersecurity get me a SOC job?
No — and any site implying otherwise is selling you something. Entry SOC postings screen for Security+, CCNA Cybersecurity, degrees, or experience. CCST Cybersecurity is mile one: the cheapest structured start, backed by excellent free training, on a road that realistically runs through Security+ and often an IT support rung first. Our SOC Analyst career path maps the honest route.
CCST Cybersecurity or Security+ — which should I take?
If you need a security-relevant credential for job applications: Security+, no contest — it's DoD 8140-approved and the keyword filters search for it, at roughly 3× the price. CCST is for an earlier moment: students, tight budgets, or testing whether security genuinely pulls you before committing real money. Many people do CCST's free path first, then spend on Security+ with confidence.
Is this the same as CCNA Cybersecurity?
No — different tiers. CCST Cybersecurity ($125, entry) is the beginner checkpoint. CCNA Cybersecurity ($300, associate — formerly CyberOps Associate, renamed February 2026) is the SOC-focused associate cert that actually appears in some analyst postings. Cisco positions CCST as the stepping stone toward it, but no exam credit transfers.
Does it expire?
Earned before July 15, 2025: lifetime. On or after: 5 years, renewable only by passing any current CCST or higher Cisco exam. CE credits don't apply at this tier.
What's actually on the exam?
Five domains: security principles, network security concepts, endpoint security, vulnerability assessment and risk, and incident handling. 40–50 questions in 50 minutes, including performance-based items. It tests the fundamentals the 120-hour path teaches — no exotic content, no trick depth.
