What you actually do

You build and repair the physical infrastructure every network runs on: pulling and terminating cable, testing and certifying runs, installing and maintaining telecom and transmission equipment, mounting antennas, and restoring service after storms and outages. It's hands-on, on-site work — a van, a tool bag, and a ticket queue instead of a desk. This is one of the few legitimate no-degree, no-coding entries into IT, and it maps almost directly onto military signal and comms experience.

  • Load the van and drive to the first site — a new office buildout that needs forty cable drops pulled and terminated
  • Punch down and label each run, then certify it with a cable tester and document the results
  • Troubleshoot a dead jack by tracing it from the wall plate back through the patch panel
  • Climb a ladder to mount an access point or antenna and route its cable cleanly
  • Get pulled off schedule for an outage call — find the damaged span, splice or re-terminate, and restore service

This fits you if…

  • You'd rather work with your hands than sit at a desk all day
  • You like finishing something you can physically see and test
  • You want into IT without a degree or any coding

Less ideal if…

  • You want remote or hybrid work — this is on-site by definition
  • Physical labor, heights, or weather exposure is a dealbreaker
  • You want the highest long-term pay ceiling without changing roles later
The honest downsides: This is physical work: ladders, crawl spaces, attics in summer, weather that doesn't care about your schedule. Storm and outage restoration means on-call and long days when things break. It is not remote — ever. And the pay ceiling is lower than office IT unless you deliberately move toward network engineering or specialized fiber/tower work.

An ordered path from beginner to employable. Certifications are optional checkpoints, not the point — skills and a portfolio are.

    Learn hardware and cabling basics

    Study A+ material (free via Professor Messer) while getting your hands dirty: tear down a PC, crimp your own Ethernet cables, learn the connector types by touch.

    Prove the fundamentals

    Earn CompTIA A+ to show hardware and troubleshooting competence — useful for field-service roles and essential if you later pivot indoors.

    Get on a crew

    Apply to low-voltage contractors, ISPs, and telecom field-service outfits — helper and installer roles hire on attitude and basic skills, and train the rest. Military signal experience slots straight in here. BICSI Installer 1 is the industry credential worth pursuing once you're working.

    Specialize or climb

    Pick a branch: fiber (FOA CFOT — the higher-skill, better-paid copper alternative), tower/wireless work (the growing segment), or add Network+ knowledge and move into network administration — the classic route to a higher ceiling.

Certifications for this path

A facet of the path, not the path itself — skills and a portfolio come first.

Certs matter less here than demonstrable hands-on skill — many techs are hired with none and trained on the job. The industry-specific signals are BICSI's cabling installation certs (Installer 1 and up) and the Fiber Optic Association's certs (CFOT) for fiber work; we don't have guides for those yet, so check their official sites. CompTIA A+ is the one broad cert that helps, mainly for the hardware/field-service side and for pivoting into office IT later.
