What you actually do

You install, configure, and maintain the network that a business runs on. Day to day you watch for outages, trace connectivity problems one hop at a time, configure switches and routers, manage IP addressing and VLANs, and keep firewalls and Wi-Fi healthy. Entry work often starts in a Network Operations Center (NOC), watching dashboards and triaging incidents before they spread.

  • Check overnight alerts and the monitoring dashboard for anything degraded
  • Trace a 'the internet is slow in Building C' complaint down to a single switch port or uplink
  • Configure a new VLAN and update firewall rules for a team that's moving offices
  • Document the fix in the runbook so the next person can repeat it
  • Escalate a hardware failure and coordinate the swap with the vendor

The honest downsides: NOCs run 24/7, so nights, weekends, and on-call pages are normal early on. Alarm fatigue is real, and you can get blamed for outages outside your control. The ladder is slow without certs.
