What you actually do
You install, configure, and maintain the network that a business runs on. Day to day you watch for outages, trace connectivity problems one hop at a time, configure switches and routers, manage IP addressing and VLANs, and keep firewalls and Wi-Fi healthy. Entry work often starts in a Network Operations Center (NOC), watching dashboards and triaging incidents before they spread.
- •Check overnight alerts and the monitoring dashboard for anything degraded
- •Trace a 'the internet is slow in Building C' complaint down to a single switch port or uplink
- •Configure a new VLAN and update firewall rules for a team that's moving offices
- •Document the fix in the runbook so the next person can repeat it
- •Escalate a hardware failure and coordinate the swap with the vendor
