Network Security Engineer
Protect the pathways that information travels through.
This is usually a second role — most people arrive from support, systems or networking.
What you actually do
- Configure and troubleshoot firewalls, and work out which rule is silently dropping traffic
- Analyse traffic to understand what is actually talking to what
- Build segmentation policies so a problem in one part of the network cannot spread
- Deploy and maintain VPNs and encrypted tunnels between sites and users
- Investigate suspicious connections — where they went, how much left, and whether it mattered
- Implement network access control so unknown devices do not simply get an address
- Apply Zero Trust controls: verify the device and the user, then allow the specific thing
- Inspect logs from firewalls, proxies and sensors
- Harden network devices themselves — management planes, credentials, protocols
- Configure intrusion detection and prevention, and tune out the noise
- Troubleshoot the connectivity problems your own security policy caused

Often confused with
Titles overlap heavily in IT and tell you very little. Each of these puts Network Security Engineer beside another role on the same dimensions, with the practical differences underneath.

Reading about work and doing it are different. Each of these is free, runs on the machine you already have, and takes under an hour and a half. Finding out you dislike it is a genuinely useful result — and far cheaper here than after an exam voucher.
Certifications that fit this path
These come last for a reason. A certification is evidence for a direction you have already chosen — it is not the direction itself.
Vendor certifications (Fortinet NSE, Palo Alto PCNSE) matter a great deal here, but only for the vendor your employer actually runs. Get the platform-neutral foundation first.
