IT Project Coordinator

Read this before you tick anything

This is a plan, not a qualification. Nobody completes it in order, plenty of people get hired halfway down it, and some finish the whole thing and still have a hard search. It tracks how much of this plan you have worked through — nothing more, and specifically not how employable you are. There is no score, no streak, and nothing here is a deadline.

The roadmap

Written as an order because the earlier stages genuinely make the later ones easier — not because skipping one is forbidden.

  1. Stage 1

    Learn the vocabulary

    Agile, Scrum, and waterfall basics plus the tooling — free via Scrum.org's Scrum Guide, Atlassian's agile guides, and a Jira free tier. Learn to build a real project plan in a spreadsheet.

  2. Stage 2

    Build coordination evidence

    Coordinate something real: a volunteer project, a community event, a process fix at your current job. Document the requirements, the plan, the risks, and the outcome — that write-up is your portfolio.

  3. Stage 3

    Add an entry credential

    CAPM, PSM I, or ITIL 4 Foundation — pick the one matching the jobs you're seeing locally. These validate the vocabulary; your portfolio proves you can use it.

  4. Stage 4

    Pick your lane

    Project management (toward PMP once you have the experience it requires), business analysis (add SQL and data skills), or platform ownership (become the Jira/M365 person). Each is a real career, not just a rung.

Skills this path is built on

Tick what you can already do. Most people arrive with more of these than they expect — especially the foundational ones, which are the part everyone skips and then has to come back for.

Certifications

Evidence for a direction you have already chosen, in the order they stop being premature. You do not need all of them, and buying the next one is rarely the answer to a stalled search.

Entry credential

PMI CAPM

PMI's genuine foundation cert — the recognized entry signal for project roles (PMP comes later, after documented experience).

Agile lane

Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I)

The no-course-required Scrum credential with lifetime validity — ideal if the jobs you're seeing are agile teams.

Service-management lane

ITIL 4 Foundation

The IT service-management vocabulary enterprises run on — strongest for service desk and ITSM-adjacent coordination.
