CCIE remains the right call in specific rooms: Cisco partners (the number literally maintains their discounts), consulting (you bill on it), ISPs and large Cisco-standardized enterprises, and personal mastery pursued with open eyes. Formally yes — there are no prerequisites, and ENCOR alone qualifies you for the lab. Practically it's how people donate $1,600 to Cisco repeatedly: the lab assumes CCNP-and-beyond fluency executed under 8-hour pressure. Nearly every passer's story runs through CCNP-level mastery first, whether or not they collected the certificate.
Is CCIE still worth it with AI and automation changing networking?
In its rooms, yes; as a general career default, less than it used to be — and Cisco's own actions are the tell: AI added to ENCOR v1.2, an AI 'Deploy, Operate, Optimize' module joining every CCIE lab from 2027–28. The market increasingly pays CCNP-plus-automation profiles what it used to reserve for CCIEs. The number's value has concentrated, not collapsed: partners, consulting, and ISPs still pay it gladly.
What about CCDE instead of CCIE?
A real alternative for design-minded seniors: no CLI anywhere, an 8-hour scenario practical, an estimated (unofficial) fewer than 1,000 holders worldwide. But it's harder logistics (about six exam dates a year at Cisco facilities only) and near-invisible outside senior networking circles.
